Nixa Grew Fast. So Did Its Trees.

Most of the Tree Service in Nixa that homeowners ask us about involves trees that are about as old as their subdivision. The city counted 276 residents in 1910, jumped more than 150 percent in the 2000 census, and reached 23,257 people by 2020. The maples, pears and oaks planted along those new streets twenty years ago are now big enough to rub gutters, shade out lawns and reach the service wire. That is the right age to prune them, not the age to wait.

A city with its own power company

Nixa runs its own electric utility, which means the crews trimming the lines are city crews, not City Utilities of Springfield. A Nixa Utilities spokesman told KY3 in 2023 that crews aim to revisit trimmed areas every three to five years and come out when a property owner calls about trees in the lines. During storm work they clear the line and leave the cut material where it falls, because time spent hauling is time not spent restoring power. That leaves the owner with the wood, and with any limbs that are close to, but not yet on, the wire. We take care of that part: pruning yard trees back from the drop to the house, and cleaning up after utility crews have opened the line.

The April 2025 storm went right through town

Nixa took one of the hardest hits in the region on April 29, 2025. The National Weather Service logged an 87 mph gust in a public report from Nixa that morning, and an EF-0 tornado touched down near Eaglecrest Street about 9:30 a.m., traveling half a mile northeast across Highway 160. Damage like that tends to show up later as hangers, limbs cracked but still in the canopy, and trees with lifted root plates that still look upright. If your yard went through that storm and nobody has looked up into the crown since, it is worth an inspection.

Where the brush goes

Nixa does not run curbside brush pickup; after the July 2023 storms the city said a pickup option was not available. Residents use the Nixa Recycling Center at 1093 Eaglecrest Street, which during that cleanup accepted logs and limbs over four inches thick if cut to six feet or shorter. When we do the work, we chip the small material and haul the wood unless you want to keep it for the fire pit.

Common Nixa requests

  • Raising low limbs over sidewalks and driveways in newer subdivisions
  • Thinning fast-growing maples before they get heavy over the roof
  • Removing storm-split Bradford pears
  • Clearing branches off the service drop after a Nixa Utilities disconnect
  • Stump grinding so a front yard can be regraded or replanted
  • Hazard checks on trees that leaned after the 2025 windstorm

Nixa Details That Affect Tree Work

  • Utility trimming cycle. Nixa Utilities told KY3 in 2023 that its crews aim to return to trimmed areas every three to five years, respond when owners call about trees in lines, and leave cut material on site during storm restoration.
  • Brush and log drop-off. The Nixa Recycling Center at 1093 Eaglecrest Street took logs and limbs over four inches in diameter, six feet or shorter, from residents after the July 30, 2023 storms. The city said curbside pickup was not available.

Nixa Questions

Nixa Utilities trimmed my tree but left the limbs. Can you haul them?

Yes. Leaving wood on site is normal during utility work, especially after storms. We can chip the brush, cut the larger pieces to length and take it away, or stack firewood where you want it.

Does Nixa pick up brush at the curb?

After the 2023 storms the city said curbside pickup was not available, and residents hauled brush to the recycling center on Eaglecrest Street. Check with the city for current rules, or include haul-off in your estimate and let us handle it.

My subdivision trees are only 15 or 20 years old. Do they really need pruning?

That is the cheapest time to do it. Removing a crossing or low limb that is two inches thick leaves a small wound; waiting until it is eight inches thick does not. Early structural pruning also keeps the tree from developing weak, tight forks that split in wind.

Do you work in the older part of Nixa near Main Street too?

Yes. The older blocks have bigger, older trees on smaller lots, and those jobs often involve roping limbs down over fences and roofs. We price each yard on what it actually takes.
