What to Do When a Storm Puts a Tree on the House

Emergency storm tree service covers the calls nobody plans for: a red oak through the porch roof after a thunderstorm, a split silver maple across the driveway, a Callery pear lying on the car, or a big limb hanging by a strip of bark over the back door. Springfield gets every kind of tree-breaking weather, from the January 2007 ice storm that left more than 75,000 City Utilities customers without power to the April 29, 2025 storms that brought down so many trees the city waived brush disposal fees. When it happens, the goal is to get people safe, get the weight off the house and then deal with everything else in order.

First, stay safe

Assume any wire touching a tree or lying on the ground is live. Keep people and pets away and report it to City Utilities, or call 911 if anyone is in danger. Do not go into a room where a tree has come through the roof, and do not try to cut a tree that is under tension; trunks and limbs that are bent or pinned can spring back hard when cut. Take photos of the damage from a safe distance for your insurance company.

What we do first

Storm calls are worked in order of danger, not the order they come in. A tree on an occupied house, one blocking the only way in or out, or a limb hanging over a walkway comes before a tree lying across a back fence. We take the weight off the structure carefully, often piece by piece from the top, so nothing shifts or drops further into the house. Tarping the roof and repairing the structure are jobs for a roofer or contractor, but we will leave the opening clear for them.

Trees in the wires

City Utilities says it may cut trees off its lines to restore power but does not clean up fallen trees or branches. Nobody without authorization may work within 10 feet of an energized primary line under Missouri law, so if your tree is tangled in those wires, CU has to clear the line before we can touch the tree. Once the wire is safe, we cut up and remove what is left.

Insurance and paperwork

Whether insurance pays depends on your policy and what the tree hit. Many policies cover removing a tree that fell on a covered structure because of wind or ice, but a fallen tree that hit nothing may not be covered. Our written quote and invoice list each tree and the work done so you have clear paperwork for an adjuster.

Emergency Storm Tree Service Questions

A tree fell on my house. What should I do first?

Get everyone out of the affected rooms and away from any wires, and call 911 if anyone is hurt or a line is down. Report wire damage to City Utilities. Take photos from a safe distance, call your insurance company, and then call us to get the tree off the house.

Will City Utilities remove a tree that fell on its lines?

City Utilities says it may cut a tree off its lines to restore power, but it does not clean up fallen trees or branches. Once the line is safe, the wood left on your property is yours to deal with, and we can remove it.

Does homeowners insurance pay for storm tree removal?

It depends on your policy. Many policies cover removing a tree that fell on a covered structure in a windstorm or ice storm, often up to a set limit. A tree that fell without hitting anything may not be covered. Check with your agent; our itemized paperwork helps with the claim.

Can I cut up the fallen tree myself?

Small limbs on the ground, yes, if you are comfortable with a saw. Anything bent under tension, hung up in another tree, lying on the house or touching wires is dangerous to cut, and is better left to a crew. If you haul brush yourself, the city's Yardwaste Recycling Center takes limbs up to 10 feet long and 10 inches thick.

Can a storm-damaged tree be saved?

Sometimes. A tree that lost a few limbs but has a sound trunk often recovers with clean pruning cuts. A split trunk, lifted root plate or loss of most of the crown usually means removal. We look at it once the urgent work is done and tell you which.
