West of Springfield, Out in the Wind

Tree Service in Republic often starts the morning after a line of storms crosses the open ground west of Springfield. During the overnight storms of October 21, 2019, the National Weather Service received reports from the Republic area of numerous trees down and six metal poles bent, and an EF-0 tornado tracked through the Wilson's Creek area three miles southeast of town. When storms on July 30, 2023 pushed 60 to 75 mph winds across the region, Republic was again on the list of places cleaning up limbs.

Brush rules in Republic

The city runs its own Brush and Yard Waste Facility at 915 N. West Avenue. During the 2023 cleanup it accepted limbs up to six inches thick at no cost, asked residents to empty leaves out of plastic bags, and required people to take their bags, ropes and ties home. That six-inch limit matters: a storm-broken oak produces plenty of wood thicker than that. When we handle the cleanup, the big pieces are cut, loaded and hauled with the rest, and nothing ends up stacked at the curb waiting for a pickup that does not exist.

A city that doubled and then some

Republic had 81 residents in 1880 and 18,750 in 2020, a 27.1% jump in just the last decade, and Census estimates have it above 22,000 now. Since 2005 it has also included Brookline, which consolidated with Republic but kept its name and ZIP code. Growth here mostly means new subdivisions on former farm and pasture land. The trees on those lots tend to be either young plantings or older fencerow trees left standing at the edge of a development, often hedge, hackberry, elm or oak that grew up with no competition and wide, heavy limbs. Those fencerow trees are the ones that tend to fail onto new fences and roofs.

What Republic homeowners call about

  • Fencerow trees overhanging new backyards
  • Storm hangers and split leaders after a wind event
  • Pruning young subdivision trees so they develop one strong leader
  • Removing dead ash, since emerald ash borer was confirmed in Greene County in 2018
  • Stump grinding before a fence, patio or shed goes in
  • Clearing brush along back property lines

Near the battlefield

The land around Republic was the site of the Battle of Wilson's Creek in 1861, now a national battlefield. Some homes sit close to its edge, with woods and open savanna next door. Trees on a property line shared with federal land are still the homeowner's to manage on their side, but any work that would cross the line needs to stay on your side of it. We confirm property lines before cutting anything near a boundary.

Republic Questions

Can I take storm limbs to the city myself?

Republic's facility on N. West Avenue has taken limbs up to six inches thick, with leaves out of bags. Anything thicker needs another plan. Check current hours and rules with the city before loading the trailer.

The big tree on our back fence line came with the house. Whose is it?

Ownership follows the trunk: if the trunk is on your side, it is yours. If it straddles the line, it is shared, and it is worth talking to the neighbor before major work. How far you can trim a neighbor's tree is partly a legal question, so the practical first step is a conversation, not a saw.

How soon after a storm can you come out?

Call and leave the details any time. Trees on houses, cars or driveways go first, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. If a line is involved, the utility has to clear it before anyone else works on the tree.

Is my ash tree worth treating?

If it is healthy, valuable to you and has lost little of its crown, treatment can work, but it must be repeated every year or two. MDC advises removing ash that has lost more than half its leaves and branches.
