Emerald Ash Borer and Your Ash Trees
Ash tree removal has become routine in Springfield since emerald ash borer arrived. The Missouri Department of Agriculture confirmed the beetle in Greene and Polk counties in 2018 after it turned up in traps at three sites, including a Greenways trail in southwest Springfield. The Missouri Department of Conservation says it kills more than 99 percent of the ash trees it attacks within three to four years. When the City of Springfield announced its response, it estimated ash made up less than 3 percent of the urban canopy, but in many yards the one ash out back is the biggest tree on the lot.
Signs your ash is infested
The larvae feed under the bark, cutting off the tree's flow of water and sugar. The first thing most people notice is a thinning crown, with dead twigs and branches near the top. Woodpeckers dig after the larvae and flake off outer bark, leaving pale patches on the trunk. Look closely and you may see small D-shaped exit holes, and under loose bark, winding S-shaped tunnels. Sprouts along the trunk are another sign that the tree is in trouble.
Treat or remove?
Treatment works for healthy, high-value ash trees. MDC says insecticides can protect a tree but must be repeated every year or two, with early spring the most effective time. Products sold at home stores work best on trees under 20 inches across at chest height; bigger trees need products available only to licensed applicators. The Maryland Department of Agriculture's homeowner guide advises treating only trees with less than 30 percent canopy loss, and MDC recommends removal for trees that have already lost more than half of their leaves and branches. On the visit we tell you where your tree falls. If treatment makes sense, it has to be applied by someone licensed for those products, and we will say so plainly.
Why waiting makes removal harder
Ash wood dries out and becomes brittle soon after the tree dies. Limbs that would bend under a rope on a live tree can snap on a dead one, which makes climbing and rigging slower and sometimes means a lift instead of a climber. A dead ash over a roof, a driveway or a street is a real hazard. Taking it down while it is still mostly sound is safer and often costs less.
Keep ash wood local
The beetle can keep emerging from ash firewood and logs for up to two years after the tree is cut, according to MDC. Ash wood from your yard should be burned on site or nearby, or chipped, not hauled to a cabin in another county. For a replacement tree, MDC suggests a different species, such as a native Missouri oak.
What Ash Tree Removal Covers
We look at every ash on the property, not just the one that prompted the call.
Ash inspection
Crown thinning, bark flaking, exit holes and sprouting checked on each ash, with a keep-or-remove opinion.
Live ash removal
Declining trees removed before they turn brittle, usually the simpler and safer job.
Dead ash removal
Brittle trees taken down with extra care in rigging, or with a lift where climbing is unsafe.
Wood and chip handling
Ash wood chipped, cut for local firewood or hauled for local disposal.
Stump grinding
The ash stump ground below grade, priced on its own line.

How It Works
1. Check every ash
We look at the crown, bark, trunk and base of each ash and note how much canopy is gone.
2. Lay out the options
For each tree: treat, remove now or watch, with the reasons and the costs side by side.
3. Price in writing
Removal method, wood handling, stump and price in writing.
4. Remove and clean up
The tree comes down in sections, and the ash wood stays local as agreed.

Ash Tree Removal Questions
Is emerald ash borer in Springfield?
Yes. The Missouri Department of Agriculture confirmed it in Greene County in 2018, with one trap site on a Greenways trail in southwest Springfield and others southeast and northwest of the city. Untreated ash trees in the area should be assumed to be at risk.
Can my ash tree be saved?
If it is healthy and has lost little of its canopy, often yes, with insecticide treatment repeated every year or two. The Maryland Department of Agriculture advises treating only trees with under 30 percent canopy loss. Trees that have lost more than half their leaves and branches are better removed, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation.
How much does ash tree removal cost?
HomeGuide's 2026 national range for ash removal is about $650 to $2,000, and Homeyou puts a medium tree removal in Springfield at $517 to $703. Dead, brittle ash over a house or wires costs more because rigging takes longer. We give a written price after seeing it.
Can I keep the ash wood for firewood?
Yes, as long as you burn it at home or nearby. MDC notes the beetle can emerge from ash firewood and logs for up to two years after cutting, so do not move it to another area. We can cut it to firewood length or chip it.
What should I plant instead of ash?
The Missouri Department of Conservation suggests replanting with a different species, such as a native Missouri oak. Plant at least 25 feet from overhead power lines, as City Utilities advises, and call Missouri 811 before you dig.
